Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP™)

Dr. Ueno is very proud to offer laser periodontal surgery with the PerioLase Laser to treat patients who suffer from periodontal disease. Similar to what LASIK did for eye problems, this patented and FDA APPROVED laser therapy allows us to treat periodontal patients with a minimally invasive breakthrough procedure. For the first time, Laser Periodontal Therapy™ is available for our patients otherwise facing painful gum surgery for the treatment of periodontal disease.

Today, our office offers LANAP™(Laser assisted new attachment procedure). You can feel confident knowing that Dr. Ueno continues to provide both high-tech and high-level care.

You could be one of more than 75% of Americans who have periodontal disease, which is the major cause of tooth loss in adults. Until now, this meant painful surgery with blades and sutures.
UP Lanap Process
  1. A periodontal probe identifies excessive pocket depths.

  2. The initial pass with the laser removes bacteria and diseased tissue.

  3. Special ultrasonic instruments remove root surface tartar that was loosened by the initial laser pass.

  4. A second pass of the laser causes blood clot stimulation in the pocket to keep the epithelium from growing back into those areas.

  5. Reattachment of soft tissue and bone to the clean root surfaces is initiated.

  6. The patient's bite is adjusted to eliminate bite trauma.

  7. New connective tissue attachment and bone growth occur.

UP LANAP Process

The laser's wave length penetrates and vaporizes the pigmented bacteria which causes your periodontal gum infection. This process enables Dr. Ueno to treat the infected area without damaging the surrounding tissue. A healthy blood clot is formed around the tooth stimulating your own body to heal and regenerate around the tooth.

The procedure itself is not painful at all since you will be completely numbed. Patients are very pleasantly surprised by the lack of post treatment pain. If you are apprehensive or nervous about the procedure, we have the ability to offer you medications that will help to relax you. Most of our patients are able to go back to work or school on the same day or the next day without taking any days off.

Why is Laser Gum Surgery Better for the Treatment of Gum Disease?

LANAP™ is easy for the patient as there is no cutting and no suturing. Our patients experience little to no discomfort as compared to traditional periodontal surgery. Full mouth treatment also takes much less time than traditional surgery. It could take as little as one treatment visit to our office and two follow up visits to treat your entire mouth. Traditional surgery could require up to four sessions of about one hour each, with subsequent visits for suture removal and additional check-ups.

As discussed earlier, there is also less than a 24 hour recovery period, so you won't lose time from work or school. LANAP™ is safe for patients with health concerns such as diabetes, HIV, hemophilia, or those taking medications such as Plavix or aspirin. Patients with advanced periodontal disease who take Bisphosphonates medication, such as Fosamax, can delay or avoid having extractions because even teeth with a poor prognosis can benefit from this life-changing procedure. We have been able to save many teeth that were once deemed "hopeless" and were planned to be extracted.
